Lizzie’s Bilateral Reimplantation

When Lizzie was 5 months and 6 days old she had a bilateral sheath reimplantation surgery. I can honestly say it was the most frightening time in my life. The surgery took much longer than expected, but when it was finally over, we believed that we had made it. We had fought the big bad beast and won. After a few days in the hospital we were able to take her home. We were finally bringing home our new, “improved”, healthy baby girl.

The first few days were trying because she had terrible bladder spasms, and wouldn’t eat, but withing a few days, she was our sweet little girl again. We had such hopes of a full recovery.

Then six weeks later, she started running a fever. We took her in immediately, and she had another infection. I remember thinking, you’re wrong. She can’t have another infection, it’s fixed…. we’re done with this chapter in our lives.

It reminds me a quote I once read, “God, I know you won’t give me more than I can handle, but will you please quit trusting in me so much?!?!” I was so sad for my little girl. The urologist explained to us, that this wasn’t all that unusual. Sometimes there is a breakthrough infection during the healing process. We should give her some time to heal.

So we gave her some time…. about 6 weeks. Then she had another infection. Another nasty, resistant infection that we couldn’t treat without IV abx. We went back to the hospital for more tests, and more abx, and were sent home with another pic line. We realized that Lizzie was different. It wasn’t going to be this easy. After infection number 8, we started a new line of testing.
